Putting the Kabosh on Spammers

Monday, November 22, 2010
Well guys, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've just turned the word verification back on under my comment settings for this blog, because the amount of spam I am getting lately has just been overwhelming. It started out as spam in English, but now I'm getting Asian and Arabic spam, as well as generic requests addressed to the admin of GoRetro telling me that a link of mine is not working. I mean, enough already. I guess it's a good sign that your blog is getting increased traffic, but it's out of control. Who are these people and why don't they have a life? Or most likely they're bot generated. More importantly, do the jerks behind them think this lame marketing tactic actually works? I don't know anyone who admits to clicking on an off-topic advertising link on sites they visit.

Spam and spammers just suck; there's no polite way of saying it. I apologize for the inconvenience (that's for you, Marlene :)), but I really hope this cuts it out or at least cuts it down.

Just for fun, and to keep a retro theme to this post, here's a thoroughly disgusting 1975 for Spam...spread? Ewww.

Also this week may be a slow one on the blog...but I'm going to try to get another post up before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks for understanding!

  1. My gosh, I don't think I've ever seen something as disgusting as Spam Spread!

And good on you for trying to kick the spammers - I get it too, and it's très annoying. The thing is, they don't stop! I have to approve all my comments, but they still submit them.

  3. I thought the cream corn in balogna ad I posted a few years ago was bad, but spam spread might just top it. I'm imagining having to pick this out of my teeth. Ewwwwwww.

  4. Oh - I HATE SPAM. I'm getting hit with TONS of it lately, too...but it's generally being left on all posts that are older than a week....and I have "comment moderation" turned on for any comments older than 3 days. (This is so I don't miss anything.)

Have you thought about comment moderation instead of word verification? The bot spammers are smart enough to get around the word verification thing now....and even human spammers don't seem to find it that much of a hurdle, from all the articles I've read, anyway.

  5. Thanks, Ruby Rach and Doug. So far so good...fingers crossed. You have a great Thanksgiving as well.

Tattered and Lost - I know, nasty stuff! I had to go on the Spam site today for a work related assignment and I'm pretty sure I didn't see the spread on there...no surprise if it didn't last long.

Marlene - yep, I was accepting/declining/moderating comments but for any that are a week or older but they were also leaving it on recent posts and it was getting to be a pain to delete them. Anyways I'll see if this helps.

  6. Spammers are definitely very annoying. I hope that you won't be getting bothered by them anymore soon.

I didn't even know that there was a Spam spread - looks pretty gross. I've only tried Spam once and did not like it at all.

    Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
