Two Forgotten Friday Favorites: Bananarama
Yeah, I know just last week I highlighted a female 80s girl group, The Bangles, but I realized that we're a few weeks into summer and not once have I heard "Cruel Summer" on the radio. Criminal! Believe it or not, Bananarama is still active today - as a duo. Two of the original members, Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin, still perform. But the group enjoyed its greatest success in the 80s when a third member, Siobhan Fahey, was with them. One of these cute ladies was married to Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, I believe - although I don't remember which one.
I loved this comment about them that I saw on YouTube: "Young people will notice how the girls are all fully clothed- this is because back then the music was better and we didn't need to be distracted with bare flesh. Oh yeah - these 3 girls are all cuter than the sluts around now as well"
Ha ha! So true...I agree. Here's the fun "Cruel Summer" video, and another lost hit, "I Heard A Rumor":
Man, I haven't heard from them in ages!!
ReplyDeleteLove Bananarama, and love that quote you quoted! HA HA HA!! So true!!!
ReplyDeletehmm, you know I haven't heard it lately either.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Bananarama as a kid - they were quite the thing :)
LOL I love Bananarama, I was a teenager in the 80's so I remember them well
ReplyDeleteI had a serious straight girl crush on the brunette. She was so amazing looking in a classic and an on-so-80s way. Love it!
ReplyDeletebtw, it was Siobhan who was married to Dave Stewart. I think he produced her work with Shakespeare's Sister...
ReplyDeleteSo, because of this blog post, I was reminded of their song "Robet Dinero's Waiting." I LOVED IT. Here's a link to the YouTube video:

I *think* I saw them do this on Solid Gold!
Thanks, Amanda - I'll check it out! I vaguely remember the Robert De Niro song.
ReplyDeleteI think that I saw on a VH1 show 5 or 6 years ago that one of them was dating or was married to the other Wham! guy Andrew. Not trusting my memory completely though.
ReplyDeleteMy husband loves Bananarama! ...Jude
ReplyDeleteI heard this song 3 times last week during our 2700 mile road trip, thanks to Sirius satellite 80's radio station. Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteI always loved the way they were dressed in that video - makes me long for my comfy parachute pants and hightop Reeboks from the 80s!
