Happy Birthday Elvis

Friday, January 08, 2010

As I'm sure you already know, today would've been Elvis' 75th birthday. The amount of media attention this milestone received is a testament to the staying power of The King. Although I wouldn't count myself as a big fan, I certainly love his music and agree that there was no one else like Elvis and probably never will be. All of the world's Adam Lamberts and Justin Timberlakes will never match the talent in Elvis' pinkie finger alone. He was a real man and a real presence. One of my mother's friends saw him perform in one of the last years of his life and refuses to say anything bad about his weight. All she saw up on stage was the man himself, and still says it was the best concert she ever attended.

So, what can be said about Elvis Presley that hasn't already been covered on a million blogs? Not much, so I'm just going to list my top five Elvis songs:

1. Heartbreak Hotel

I love that there's little backing music on this song, except for a minimal bass, electric guitar, and tingling piano. It's Elvis' voice that is the real star on this track.

2. All Shook Up

Perfectly captures the ittery jittery high of being in love.

3. Can't Help Falling In Love With You
I love this song even more than "Love Me Tender."

4. Burning Love
A very sexy song - as sung by a very sexy man.

5. Return to Sender
Does anyone mail old fashioned letters anymore today? This wouldn't sound the same if it were about today's email: "Undeliverable." I just really like the melody.

Have any favorite Elvis memories you'd like to share? I'd love to hear them.

  1. If I had a dollar for every Elvis movie I watched w/my mom on TBS in the 80s, I'd go back to Graceland.
